What’s the Apogee up to?
Some submissions confront hard truths.
“you’ll be better my september,” our Spring 2024 poetry award winner, Ellen Durham, leaned into the idea of a fresh start. The poem reflects on believing that time will smooth everything out, only to learn that growing up brings new challenges alongside new beginnings.
Thank you, Ellen, for sharing work that feels personal and, yet, deeply relatable.
To every writer waiting for the “right moment”: sometimes the bravest thing you can do is let the poem go and see where it lands.

Writing can be an act of devotion.
Jocelyn Krull (’18) submitted to Apogee across volumes 53–56, guided by a love of creating and the satisfaction of shaping ideas into something shareable. A humanities major, she contributed three winning pieces: “Thoughts in Fading” (vol. 54), “Incantations” (vol. 55), and “Blood Geometry” (vol. 56). Her work moved through mortality, environmental grief, and the quiet weight of routine, each piece rooted in deep personal reckoning.
Thank you, Jocelyn, for trusting us with work that still resonates years later.
If there’s something you’re ready to put into the world, we’re ready to read it. Submissions, as always, are open.

Some submissions surprise even their creators.
Jonah submitted his winning piece last year, having sent work the year before as well. He says he took the leap “just because it looked cool,” never expecting it would win. What drew him to Apogee was an appreciation for the opportunity the journal provides.
“I appreciate everyone who took the time to review all the submissions, and I’m honored to have won Best Visual Art,” Jonah says.
Thank you, Jonah, for sharing work that caught our eyes and reminded us that sometimes the coolest choices turn into unforgettable moments.
To all aspiring artists: if it looks cool to you, send it our way. You never know what might happen.

Let’s step into the Apogee gallery for a moment.
Allison submitted “The Gallery” last year in her first-ever submission to Apogee, hoping for a chance to share her work with others. Her fiction explores identity, transformation, and what it means to be both the person who changes… and the one who asks someone else to.
Thank you, Allison, for giving us a glimpse into a story that asks big questions about who we are and who we become.
To everyone else wondering if now is the right time: it always starts with one submission. We’re ready when you are.

Consider this a love letter to submissions past.
After two years of returning to Apogee with her work, Kayla submitted “The First Boy Who Tried to Kiss Me”, drawn by her belief in the importance of giving college writers the chance to “experience the joy of publishing”.
Thank you, Kayla, for trusting us with such an intimate, engaging piece—and for continuing to show up with work that stays with us.
To everyone else: if you’ve ever had a “first” you can’t forget, we’re ready to read it. Submissions are open.

Once an Apogee winner, always part of the Apogee story.
Over the course of this upcoming J-Term, the Apogee page will be spotlighting former Apogee winners across a variety of categories through dedicated feature posts. This is our way of celebrating the incredible work, growth, and impact of those who’ve been recognized by Apogee in the past.
We’re opening this up to any former winners who want to be featured—there’s no cap on how many spotlights we’ll share. If you’re interested, all you need to do is reach out by January 22nd.
You can contact us via DM on this page or by emailing our Media Manager, Mykal Eddins, at the email listed above. We can’t wait to highlight your journey.

And yes, submissions are open! Send ’em in anytime. It’s never too late… well, until next semester, but that’s future-you’s problem.
